RE: searching for simple sweet potatoes?

I threw this together a couple of years ago and we are still enjoying it, at home and on the road.I don't have any measurements as I originally just eyeballed it to our tastes and have never gotten around to measuring anything. Peel and cut the yams (sweet potatoes) into chunks. Cut up some apples into chunks and put in a foil pouch with the yams. Whatever combination you want more yams less apples, less yams more apples, make no difference. Sprinkle some brown sugar and cinnimon over them, drizzle with honey, pour a little maple syrup over the whole thing, close the pouch and put in the oven. I do it in the BBQ, that's why I mention foil but you could use a covered dish. Oven probably at about 350 degrees and it takes about 40 minutes. This is based on two medium sized yams and two apples. May take a little longer or shorter depending on amounts you use. Yams and apples come out soft, juice from the brown sugar, cinnamon, honey, and syrup is outstanding.......I still never seem to make quite enough (rarely any leftovers).

RE: Surge Protection

First, as Fulltimer state you can use the 50 amp guard on 30 amps. I have used the plug in type guard (from Camping World) for about 6 years now. I don't do anything to cover it from the weather and have never had a problem with it. My intention on the plug in type was that I could then move it to another rig without any problems. I have kept the same MH and haven't found anything I like better (yet). If you're worried about theft (or if someone else brings up the issue) you can get a hasp lock that will lock the surge guard to you power cord. I've never heard of one being taken, doesn't mean it hasn't happened I've just never heard of it, on here (of course ten people will now tell the story of one being taken):), or at any of the parks we have been to.

RE: American Coach

We looked very hard at an American Tradition. Really impressed until we found out that the CCC was only 2,00lb. Not near enough for a coach of this size. That is assuming (gee, that never gets me in any trouble) that the coach actually weighs what they say it does. Hmmmm, has a coach ever weighed more than the original weight sticker.....has one ever weighed less (me thinks not). Told the DW that with my luck the weight available would be on the front axle and we'd have to put all the food on the dash:) It's too bad they didn't use the next higher rated chassis for this coach (40 ft). We really liked it until we found the weight sticker. We also have a Kountry Star DP and will stick with it.

RE: Spliter for 50 amp service

Hmmm, removing the 20 amp circuit? I go to the TT parks in the Northwest and have never seen this. Not saying they don't do it just haven't seen it in this area.

RE: Spliter for 50 amp service

I recently installed (okay my business partner who is also a licensed electrician did it) the power adapter as commented by w8yxm. It works great! Took about two hours to install and the only thing about it is what in the world took me so long to do it....

RE: thousand trails

Asking in general about memberships is like asking which is better ford or chev. You will get opinions, misinformations, and statements of fact based on personal feelings (which actually may or may not be fact at all). Campground membership is not for everyone and yet is a great deal for others. Some like the idea of having a single place to go and knowing they can always go there. Others like a system of parks to have access to. Still others wouldn't even consider going to the same place twice and want to be able to travel all over and not have their dollars tied to one system. There are all kinds of valid reasons for joining or not joining. Just because one situation doesn't fit you doesn’t mean it isn't any good. You will hear alot of bad mouthing all memberships due to the fact that something just doesn’t fit the responders personal needs. This doesn’t make it bad for everyone is just makes it bad for the responders needs. You need to look at how you like to camp (lots of amenities or boondock), the types of parks you like (forest, beach, metropolitan), the area you are most likely to use it in (close to home or travel across the country). How long and how often (per year) do you plan to RV? Then you can decide if a membership will benefit you or not. You are the only one that will know if the dollars are worth it. Personal experience --- is that we joined Thousand Trails (Western Region) and have approx 15 parks within a 4 hour drive of our home (a couple within about 1 ½ hours). The parks are clean, secure and well kept. The NW area has just about everything we want to do, we can go to different parks, we enjoy their amenities soooo the dollars were worth it to us. If there was only one or two parks available in this same range then I doubt that we would have joined. We don't want to feel obligated to go to the same place, over and over, just because we already spent the dollars to be there. READ THE CONTRACT! Then read it again and make sure you understand it. Don't read it with the salesperson, take it back to your site and look it over. If they don't want you to do this then I would have to question their motives. A good salesperson will even encourage you to do so and then came back to have your questions answered. Talk with some other members at the park. Some of them will be brutally honest, but don’t forget they are still members and still using the system. Once you have decided that maybe a membership is for you and you have some specific questions feel free to ask them here. Just be sure that you separate the "don't have one ... BUT" from the actual ones that have some first hand experience with what you are asking about. TT has many different contracts available and that is the reason for the swing in dollars during the sales pitch. You get the Platnium membership first try and then things scale back from there. If you buy a re-sale make sure you know what is in the contract. If you get the contract number and call TT they will tell you what that particular contract covers (so many nights a year, specific region, etc).

RE: Question of the day

While going to a "local shelter" is a great idea keep in mind that they are not free. There is a charge to cover vets, they usually require neutering and have other costs associated with a business. Shelters are a business, even if non-profit. That said, we have done both the shelter and purbred routes. After a week with the DW you wouldn't be able to tell which came from where. In the end they are all our 4-legged fur kids.

RE: How much fulltimer's insurance?

If you overlay an umbrella policy (a good idea) they will most likely require you to have at least 100/300 coverage.

RE: Best Bang for the Buck

I agree with ArticDodge, having owned both a Nash trailer and an ArticFox fiver I would highly recommend them. Great units with strong manf support. If I remember right their toy hauler line is called Desert Fox.

RE: Fleetwood Excursion, Revolution, or American Coach

Looked at an American Tradition and DW loved it! I have to admit I was quite impressed as well BUT.... here is a higher end coach and it only had 2,000lb CCC. That is almost criminal in my mind. 10% (should be 20%) fudge factor brings it down to 1,800 and that's assuming that if you weigh it it weighs what the sticker says, which is rarely the case and guess what....they rarely (ever?) weigh less than stated. I told DW that with our luck most of the CCC would be available on the front axel and we would have to put all the food on the dash. :)

RE: Air conditioner filters ??

There is no interior cover to remove. Newmar uses a ducted system in the coach. There are several small air returns, each with a piece of filter material in it and I have cleaned these. I was just wondering if there was anything on the roof, but appears that there isn't. Thanks to all that answered and to anyone that might have more to add.

Air conditioner filters ??

Coach is a Newmar Kountry Star. I have two Dometic duo-therm air conditioners (roof mounted). I know there are filters that need cleaned inside the coach for air return but are there filters in the units on the roof?? I don't find anything in the manual from Dometic, that came with the coach, but was wondering if anyone knows if there is also a filter or something in the roof unit that I should be getting up there, taking the cover off, and cleaning???

RE: WD-40 on Tires

WD40 is not a good thing to put on your tires. Yes, it will make them look black and clean for a short period of time. BUT, it will also dry them out and actually lead to failure (cracking) faster. One of the best products for your tires is 303 Protectant. Enviromentally safe, and a great UV protectant. The suns UV rays are what are harmful to your tires.

Red Skelton and the Pledge of Alliance

A great actor, comedian, and humanitarian. The world lost a great one upon his passing. The end of this is almost eerie in its prophecy. It's from the 50's but still well worth a listend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kfz2XDXaeqc

RE: Slide-Out Jacks/Stands - Yea or Nay?

Generally not considered a good idea. If for some reason the rig settles or shifts you are putting a great stress on the slide out and may cause problems. The slide outs are made to hold their own weight so no real need to put jacks under them. Some will say they (the jacks) help to stablize the rig. For the potential problems (and cost thereof) the additional stabilization isn't worth it (in my not so humble opinion):)
